About Me

My photo
Where to walk, what to see, what to do, what to wear. If I have one aim it is to make walking cool to the masses. This being a rather perplexing goal as I am neither remotely cool nor do I enjoy a mass accumulation of folk.

Pfeiffer Falls, Big Sur, California

I make no apologies for the international flavour of this first post. This truly is a remarkable walk with stunning panoramic views dominated by the beautiful native Redwoods.
Pfeiffer Falls belongs to the Big Sur State Park, nestled between the iconic Californian coastline and the Santa Lucia Mountains. It’s easily accessible from the historic Highway One which meanders through the valley.
There is a small charge to get into the park, but there are plenty of spaces for cars, and a lodge with a restaurant, shop and the always -necessary toilets.
We purchased a map, but the route is well signposted and the paths well worn. You cannot fail to feel in awe of the mighty coast Redwoods that can proudly boast to be the tallest living organisms in the world. They provide welcome shelter from the California sun along most of the trail.
As you climb further up the route, the hillside bares the scars of the devastating wildfires that ravaged much of this area in 2008.

A Black Salamander- we think

With a few stops to take on water and pry on the local wildlife, we reached the falls that give the walk its name, in about 40 minutes. The waterfall is sixty foot high and a big attraction for all walkers. I can imagine this area gets very busy at weekends with visitors clambering to take the best photo. We took our obligatory shots and headed along the Valley View walk, a seemingly much underused and under appreciated addition to the Pfeiffer falls route.
This walk is 0.6 miles and is unfortunately not circular, but the prize at the end is well worth the extra effort. Panoramic views stretch out across the Big Sur Valley to Point Sur in the distance. We sat in almost perfect silence, breathing in every inch of the beauty sprawling before us. A rare moment to take pleasure in the feeling of insignificance.

Walking Threads
Temperatures were in the high twenties when we tackled this walk in July and it was definitely shorts and t-shirt weather. However the infamous coastal fog can roll in without warning and having a light sweater to hand would be my top tip even during the height of summer. Some parts of the route are exposed and a hat and adequate sun cream are advisable. Walking boots are a must for this trail as there are a few steep steps and plenty of uneven ground.

The Essentials
  • Location: Big Sur State Park, California
  • Transport: Car a must
  • Nearest Town: Carmel, 26miles to the north
  • Facilities: Toilets, restaurant and shop
  • The Walk: 3 miles - moderate climb with some steep steps and wooden bridges
